In 1856 when Thomas
Burberry was a mere 21 years old, he opened up his first store in Basingstoke
, Hampshire , England. Having been an apprentice to a draper, he had become
experienced in the outfitting the English townspeople. By the 1870's Burberry
had become a staple store within the community and to the visiting sportsmen
alike.
The invention of a weatherproof gabardine fabric in the 1880's was
a huge turning point in outerwear durability, causing Burberry to patent
his invention in 1888. In 1891, Burberry opened his first London store,
which today houses the corporate headquarters; and, he also had introduced
the first Burberry icon piece, the Tielocken officer's coat, a.k.a.
the classic trench coat. The 1900's consisted of designed pieces for
artic explorers and military personnel, marking Burberry's tap into
the needs of the avid outdoorsmen. The infamous, white, camel and black
check was developed and trademarked in 1924 for the lining of his trench
coats, he then expanded into designing for aviators and their aviation
garments.
In 1950, Burberry was awarded The Royal Warrant from Her Majesty the
Queen, making him even more renowned. It was not until 1967, that his
trademarked plaid design was developed on the likes of scarves, umbrellas
and luggage pieces.
The 1970's and 1980's consisted of a major global market expansion
with a key store opening in New York, followed by several other stores
opening across the continental United States. Thus, the Princess of
Wales awarding the Burberry company with The Royal Warrant in 1989.
By the late 90's and into 2000, Burberry's new management team launched
innovative designs, as well a fresh marketing campaign, bringing the
company some more distinguished awards. Also recently launched were
several European and North American stores, in addition to a new fragrance
line. Nonetheless, the infamous plaid design that Thomas Burberry first
